The First Time: A Story of Hair Loss

You may remember when you rode your bike for the first time. You may remember your first prom or your first kiss. And sometimes you remember when you first began losing hair.

I was getting ready to drop my son off at preschool when I recall running a brush through my hair. Clumps of hair had come out and I was shocked when I looked in the mirror and found my hairline thinning. I continued to lose hair over the next few months. I remember texting my best friend in tears as I struggled to understand why this was happening.

There are many causes of hair loss that include hereditary hair loss, age, childbirth, hormonal imbalance, androgenic alopecia, certain medical conditions, medication, stress, surgery and radiation. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent and can affect your scalp or your entire body. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness.

After falling down the rabbit hole and meeting with various doctors, I found out that my hair loss was attributed to thyroid disease as well as celiac disease. I control my hormones with medication and yearly blood draws to check my levels. My hair started growing back. However, I will never forget the helpless feeling I had when I looked in the mirror.

Thinning hair and hair loss in both women and men affect self-esteem as well as increased anxiety and depression. The psychological effects can be devastating. Fortunately there are solutions to hair loss.

Possible solutions to hair loss

There are medications as well as surgical options for hair loss.

The two medications that treat male pattern baldness are: Rogaine and Propecia. Rogaine works by applying the liquid or foam twice a day to your scalp to grow hair and prevent hair loss. Propecia is a pill you take daily that requires a prescription from your doctor. You may not see any results for more than a year.

There are also hair transplant options that are considered a surgery. These options can be expensive and painful and involve certain risks, such as scarring and infections.

Getting a check up is always a good idea to make sure there are no underlying conditions that can lead to hair loss such as lupus, diabetes, and thyroid conditions.

Some other options may be a more balanced diet, less stress, and certain vitamins and supplements.

However, if you still do not find an underlying condition and do not want to take medications for the rest of your life is there another way?

Is there a non-surgical way to camouflage hair loss and leave you with a natural and youthful appearance?

The good news is YES!

SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) is a new, innovative technique that is non-surgical and SAFE! The technician uses a specialized S.M.P. pen that implants pigment into the client’s scalp in the form of tiny dots. This is done to mimic the appearance of closely shaven follicles. Some clients think this is a hair transplant but no hair is moved in the process.

SMP gives you the illusion of a close buzz cut hairstyle on a bald head. SMP can be used to add density to a thinning hairline even if you are not bald.

Where can I have this done?

Ohio SMP Studio is located right here in Ohio! It is an hour drive from Columbus to Galion, Ohio.

Does the technician have experience?

YES! Meet SMP artist Clayton Rush, an award-winning master barber who has been in the hair industry over twenty years! He opened his first barbershop in 1989 and now owns three successful barbershops. He has seen every type of hairline, hair texture, hair color, and thickness. His life was changed during his own personal hair loss journey. His goal is to help restore his client's confidence through SMP.
