Poem: A Little Bit of Time Ago
A little bit of time ago,
I danced in the kitchen and jumped for joy.
I can remember the feeling I had that day,
when I found out my sweet babe’s a boy.
A little bit of time ago,
I was hazy from our nighttime feed.
I couldn’t believe how small you were,
And how much little one you would need.
A little bit of time ago,
You slept through the night the first time.
And I introduced you to fairy tales,
And you joined in the magic of a mother goose rhyme.
A little bit of time ago,
You took your first step as I cried.
And when you learned how to put on your shoes,
I watched from afar filled with pride.
A little bit of time ago,
I watched you on your first preschool day.
I realized you were ready to fly,
And if I stayed I would just get in the way.
A little bit of time ago,
I cheered you on from the sidelines so loud.
Even when you missed all those foul shots,
I want you to know I was always so proud.
A little bit of time ago,
We were picking out clothes for your first school dance.
We picked out a flower to give to your date,
As you put on a nice shirt and pants.
A little bit of time ago,
I held my breath as you learned how to drive.
And thanked God each night when you walked through the door,
That your guardian angels helped keep you alive.
A little bit of time ago,
You got your college acceptance letter as we both cried with glee.
I realized you were ready to fly again,
And if I stayed you would just want to be free.
A little bit of time ago,
You graduated and found a sweet wife.
You found your passion for your work,
And were ready to start your new life.
A little bit of time ago,
We would meet at your house for Sunday brunch.
But that one particular Sunday was different,
I guess I should call it a mother’s knowing hunch.
A little bit of time ago,
We danced in the kitchen and jumped for joy.
I can remember that feeling that day,
When I found out my babe is having a baby boy.
A little bit of time ago,
I watched as I gave you wings to fly.
So make each day a day full of joy,
It all goes by in the blink of an eye.
